Asian Forest Scorpion Care Guide
Complete care guide for Asian Forest Scorpions including enclosure setup, temperature/humidity management, feeding schedule, handling tips, and common health issues.
The Asian Forest Scorpion requires a well-ventilated, escape-proof enclosure with a minimum size of 12x18x24 inches (30x45x60 cm). A secure top is crucial as these scorpions are skilled escape artists. Use a substrate that can hold moisture but won't cause respiratory issues, like sphagnum moss or coconut fiber.
Temperature and humidity gradients are critical for this species. Maintain a temperature range of 75-85°F (24-29°C) with a slight drop at night. Humidity should be maintained between 60-80% through misting daily and maintaining high substrate moisture. Avoid direct heat sources that could cause burns or create hotspots.
Feeding is best done every 7-10 days for juveniles, gradually reducing to once weekly for adults. Use frozen-thawed crickets (size 1/4 inch) as the primary food source. Supplement with occasional mealworms and small waxworms in moderation. Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to digestive issues.
Handling Asian Forest Scorpions requires caution. They are generally more defensive than Emperor Scorpions, especially when threatened or during molting. Approach slowly, support their body if picking up, and avoid handling during the first few weeks of life. If they sting, clean the wound immediately with soap and water.
Common health issues include respiratory infections from poor ventilation, metabolic bone disease from inadequate calcium, and skin problems due to humidity extremes. Regularly inspect for signs of illness like lethargy, labored breathing, or abnormal molting patterns.
Asian Forest Scorpions have a unique life cycle with multiple instars before reaching maturity. Juveniles grow rapidly, often completing 3-4 molts within the first year. Adults can live up to 15-20 years in captivity, making proper care essential for their long-term health and longevity.
