Cockatiel Care Guide: Housing, Diet, Health & Handling

Comprehensive care guide for domesticated Cockatiels. Learn about housing requirements, temperature gradients, feeding schedules, handling techniques, and common health issues specific to this species.

Cockatiels require spacious living quarters that allow for flight and exercise. A minimum cage size of 2x3x4 feet is recommended, but larger aviaries or room-based enclosures are ideal for providing the physical activity these birds need. Avoid stacking cages as this can lead to stress and behavioral problems.

Provide a temperature range of 65-75°F (18-24°C) with a humidity level between 50-60%. Cockatiels naturally inhabit arid regions, so maintaining low humidity is crucial to prevent respiratory issues.

For optimal health, provide a varied diet that includes commercial pellets formulated specifically for cockatiels as the primary source of nutrition. Supplement with fresh fruits like apples and berries, leafy greens like kale and spinach, and crunchy vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes.

Feed your Cockatiel 1-2% of its body weight per day in pellets, divided into 2-3 meals. Fresh water should always be available, and consider using a water bottle with a sipper tube to reduce spillage and promote hydration.

Cockatiels are known for their affectionate personalities, but they can also become nippy if not handled properly. Start with short sessions (10-15 minutes) of gentle interaction, gradually increasing time as you build trust.

Regular socialization is essential. Spend quiet time in the bird's presence daily, engaging through conversation or simply sitting near its cage. This will help your Cockatiel become more confident and interactive.

Cockatiels are prone to certain health issues including respiratory problems like sinusitis, feather plucking due to stress or nutritional deficiencies, and wing damage from improper perching. Regular veterinary check-ups can help identify potential problems early on.
