Curly Hair Tarantula Care Guide: Temperature, Humidity, Feeding, and More

Comprehensive care guide for the docile Curly Hair Tarantula. Learn enclosure setup, temperature/humidity requirements, feeding schedule, and health considerations.

The Curly Hair Tarantula (Brachypelma albopilosa) is native to Mexico's tropical forests, where temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 30°C) with high humidity. To replicate this environment, create a temperature gradient in your enclosure: maintain an average temperature of 78°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C), with a warm spot around 84°F to 86°F (29°C to 30°C) for basking and a cooler area near 75°F (24°C). Avoid temperatures above 90°F (32°C) or below 70°F (21°C), as these can be stressful and even life-threatening.

Maintain humidity levels between 60% to 80%, with a preferred range of 65% to 75%. You can achieve this through proper ventilation, misting daily, and using water-soaked substrate like sphagnum moss or coconut fiber. Avoid over-misting, which can lead to mold and respiratory issues.

Curly Hair Tarantulas are docile and gentle, making them excellent pets for handlers of all experience levels. They're most active at night but will often move around during the day if the enclosure is well-ventilated and comfortable. Handle your Curly Hair carefully: support their abdomen completely, avoid sudden movements, and limit handling to 10-15 minutes per session.

Feeding frequency depends on the tarantula's age and size. Juveniles (0-1 year) should be fed every 5-7 days, while adults can go 7-10 days between meals. Offer prey items that match their body size: for Curly Hair Tarantulas, use crickets or mealworms sized 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length. Frozen-thawed prey is recommended to avoid live feeding risks.

Common health issues in Curly Hair Tarantulas include respiratory problems due to poor ventilation and humidity fluctuations. Monitor for signs like labored breathing, lethargy, or changes in appetite. Regular substrate cleaning (every 1-2 weeks) helps prevent bacterial growth and maintains a healthy environment.

Curly Hair Tarantulas typically live between 20-30 years in captivity when provided proper care. Males die after mating, while females can continue to thrive for decades if conditions remain optimal.

When setting up your enclosure, prioritize vertical space: Curly Hair Tarantulas are excellent climbers and require sufficient height (at least 8 inches) with multiple hiding places like rocks, plants, or commercial tarantula hides. Avoid using loose substrates that can cause respiratory issues, instead opting for a deep layer of well-draining materials.
