Emperor Scorpion Care Guide

Native to tropical West Africa, Emperor Scorpions thrive in warm, humid environments. Learn proper enclosure setup, feeding schedule, and handling techniques for these fascinating pets.

Emperor scorpions require a spacious, well-ventilated enclosure that mimics their native habitat. A minimum tank size of 12x18x24 inches (30x45x60 cm) is recommended, with larger enclosures preferred for adult specimens. The substrate should be deep enough to allow burrowing – at least 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) of a dry, moisture-absorbing material like sphagnum moss or coconut fiber.

Temperature and humidity gradients are crucial for Emperor scorpion health. Maintain a temperature range of 75°F–85°F (24°C–30°C), with a slight drop at night. The ideal humidity level is between 60%–80%, achieved through misting twice daily and maintaining high substrate moisture. Avoid direct heat sources, instead using heat mats or ceramic heat emitters on the sides of the enclosure to create a natural temperature gradient.

Emperor scorpions are primarily nocturnal feeders, but they will accept prey during the day if hungry enough. Feed your scorpion 1–2 medium-sized crickets (about 1/4 inch / 6 mm in length) every 7-10 days for juveniles and every 10-14 days for adults. Pre-killed frozen-thawed prey is recommended to prevent stress and ensure proper gut loading. Dust prey with a calcium supplement 24 hours before feeding.

A key aspect of Emperor scorpion care involves maintaining optimal humidity levels through regular misting. Use a water spray bottle to create a fine mist, focusing on the substrate and decorations rather than directly targeting your pet. This helps maintain a humid environment without causing stress or discomfort.

Emperor scorpions are surprisingly docile for their family, often tolerating handling with patience. Approach gently, supporting them from underneath if necessary, and avoid picking them up by their tail as this can cause injury. Begin with short sessions (5-10 minutes) and gradually increase time as your pet becomes more comfortable.

Common health issues in Emperor scorpions include metabolic bone disease due to calcium deficiencies, respiratory problems from poor ventilation, and skin infections caused by high humidity or contaminated substrate. Regularly inspect your pet for signs of illness such as lethargy, color changes, or unusual molting patterns.
