Freshwater Crayfish Care Guide - Housing, Diet & Health

Complete care guide for freshwater crayfish. Learn about ideal tank size, temperature gradients, feeding requirements, handling tips, and common health issues.

Freshwater crayfish require a spacious aquarium with proper water parameters. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended per adult animal, with plenty of hiding places like rocks, driftwood, and aquatic plants that won't be eaten (cattails or anacharis work well). Avoid using gravel as substrate - crayfish will eat it and cause digestive problems.

Temperature and humidity gradients are crucial. Maintain a temperature range of 65-75°F (18-24°C) with a slight drop at night, mimicking their natural burrowing environment. Humidity should be moderate to high, around 50-70%. Avoid direct sunlight which can cause water temperature spikes.

Feeding is straightforward - crayfish are carnivorous and opportunistic eaters. Offer frozen-thawed meaty foods like bloodworms, earthworms (cut into small pieces), and brine shrimp daily. Supplement with commercial crayfish pellets or sticks 2-3 times a week. Feed sparingly to prevent overeating and associated health issues.

Handling crayfish requires caution due to their potential for territorial aggression and cannibalism. Approach slowly, supporting the body and tail separately. Never handle them when they're molting - this is extremely stressful and can cause serious injury. Wash your hands thoroughly before handling to remove any chemicals.

Common health issues include shell deformities from improper calcium intake, bacterial infections that target open wounds (treat with salt baths or antibiotics), and respiratory problems caused by poor water quality. Regular tank maintenance, proper diet, and monitoring for signs of stress are key preventative measures.

Molting is a critical life stage where the crayfish sheds its shell to grow. Provide plenty of hiding places during this vulnerable period - they'll often seal themselves in a sheltered area until the new shell hardens (usually 2-4 weeks). Avoid disturbing them and maintain stable water parameters to minimize stress.

Monitor water parameters closely, maintaining pH between 6.5-8.0, ammonia below detectable levels, nitrite at zero, and nitrates under 20 ppm. Regular partial water changes will help prevent water quality issues that can be fatal for crayfish.
