Gargoyle Gecko Care Guide: Temperature, Humidity, Feeding & More

Learn how to create a perfect environment for your Gargoyle Gecko, including temperature gradients, humidity levels, feeding schedules, and handling tips.

Gargoyle geckos are native to the mountains of New Caledonia, where they inhabit humid, tropical forests. To replicate their natural habitat, you'll need a well-ventilated enclosure with high humidity levels throughout. A minimum tank size of 12 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide is recommended, but larger is always better — these geckos can grow up to 6-8 inches in length.

Temperature gradient is crucial for Gargoyle geckos. Maintain a basking spot around 78°F (25°C) with a slight increase during the day, while cooler areas should stay between 72°F and 75°F (22-24°C). The humidity level should remain consistently high — aim for 60-80% throughout the enclosure. You can achieve this by using misting systems, maintaining proper substrate moisture, and ensuring good air circulation.

Gargoyle geckos are primarily insectivores and thrive on a diet of live insects that match their natural prey size. Offer small to medium-sized crickets (about 1/8 inch in length), mealworms (avoid the larger ones), or pinhead red roaches three times per week. Supplement with calcium-rich foods like cuttlebone, crushed eggshells, and powdered cuttlebone daily.

When it comes to feeding, frozen-thawed prey is acceptable for occasional treats but should not replace live insects entirely. Live food provides essential nutrients and mental stimulation that's critical for maintaining these geckos' natural behaviors. Avoid overfeeding — Gargoyle geckos have small stomachs and can easily become obese.

Gargoyle geckos are known for their gentle nature, making them ideal pets for beginners. Handling should be minimal but regular to help tame your pet. Start with short sessions (5-10 minutes) and gradually increase time as they become more comfortable in your presence. Support their body entirely when handling — never pick them up by the tail.

Common health issues in Gargoyle geckos include metabolic bone disease, which can be caused by inadequate calcium intake or improper lighting. Monitor their stool quality closely — soft, runny feces may indicate digestive problems. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential to prevent and address potential health concerns early on.

When it comes to substrate, avoid using loose materials like sand or gravel that can cause respiratory issues. Instead, opt for a deep layer of sphagnum moss, coconut fiber, or reptile carpet — these retain moisture well while minimizing the risk of impaction. Clean the enclosure thoroughly every week by removing feces and uneaten prey, then disinfecting all surfaces with reptile-safe cleaning products.
