Guppy Care Guide: Housing, Feeding, and Health Tips

Learn how to provide the perfect environment for your guppies. Discover ideal tank size, temperature range, feeding frequency, and common health concerns.

Guppies require a spacious aquarium with plenty of hiding places. A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is recommended, but larger tanks (20+ gallons) will allow for more stable water conditions and reduce stress on the fish. Include plants like Java moss, Anacharis, or Amazon Swords that provide shelter and help maintain good water quality.

Guppies are native to warm, shallow waters in South America. Maintain a temperature range of 72-82°F (22-28°C) with gentle water circulation. Avoid placing tanks near air conditioning vents or drafty windows. The ideal pH is slightly acidic at 6.5-7.5. Regular water changes (10-15% weekly) are crucial to prevent ammonia buildup and maintain healthy water chemistry.

Guppies are prolific breeders, but they still require careful feeding. Feed them 2-3 times daily with high-quality commercial flakes or pellets specifically formulated for livebearers. Supplement with frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia 1-2 times a week to provide essential nutrients and variety.

Guppies are primarily carnivorous. Offer prey items that match their natural diet: small, frozen meaty foods (brine shrimp: 0.5-1 mm, bloodworms: 3-6 mm) or commercial livebearer pellets. Avoid overfeeding, as this can lead to digestive issues and poor water quality.

Guppies are generally peaceful, but males can be quite territorial. Handle them gently with netted collection whenever possible. Be cautious when handling breeding pairs, as males will harass females during courtship. A 5-minute daily interaction is recommended to help establish trust between fish and owner.

Common health issues in guppies include fin nipping from aggressive tankmates, bacterial infections (Fin rot, Tail rot), and internal parasites. Regular water testing for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels helps identify potential problems early on. Quarantine new additions before introducing them to the main tank to prevent disease transmission.

Guppy health can be compromised by poor water quality. Monitor pH fluctuations carefully – sudden changes can stress fish. Maintain optimal water parameters: 0-4 ppm ammonia, 0-1 ppm nitrite, and 10-30 ppm nitrate levels. Regular partial water exchanges help maintain healthy aquatic conditions.
