Mbuna Cichlid Care Guide - African Rift Lake Specialists

Expert care for Mbuna cichlids from Malawi's rocky shores. Understand their specific water chemistry, territorial behavior, and diet requirements.

Mbuna cichlids originate from the rocky, alkaline lakes of East Africa—specifically Lake Malawi—and thrive in environments that mimic these conditions precisely. A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended to accommodate a single adult fish comfortably, with taller tanks (at least 30 inches) preferred over wide ones.

Temperature and water chemistry are critical: maintain a stable temperature range of 78-82°F (25-28°C), with a gentle gradient that allows for slight variations. pH should be strictly between 7.8-8.6, with high alkalinity (dKH 10-20) and moderate hardness (GH 3-5 dGH). Water parameters must be carefully monitored to replicate their natural habitat.

A Mbuna cichlid's diet consists primarily of small, meaty prey items—no plant-eaters here. Feed frozen-thawed brine shrimp, bloodworms, and earthworms daily in small amounts (about 1-2 pellets per inch of fish). Supplement with commercial Mbuna pellets that match their nutritional requirements.

Feeding should be done multiple times a day, but only for short intervals to prevent overfeeding. Fish will go into hiding if food is not available immediately after presentation. A feeding schedule of every 30 minutes during peak hours (morning and evening) helps maintain natural foraging behavior.

Handling Mbuna cichlids requires extreme caution due to their aggressive nature and sharp teeth. These fish are not suited for community tanks with peaceful species, as they will defend territory aggressively. When handling, support the body carefully and avoid touching fins or gills—this can cause stress and injury.

Common health issues include shell rot from poor water quality, fin nipping due to inadequate hiding places, and swim bladder problems resulting from rapid temperature changes. Regular tank maintenance and precise water chemistry management are essential prevention strategies.
