Royal Gramma Care Guide - A Peaceful Reef Fish

Learn how to create a thriving environment for your Royal Gramma, including ideal tank size, temperature range, feeding schedule, and habitat preferences.

The Royal Gramma requires a minimum tank size of 30 gallons with plenty of rockwork and hiding places. Aim for a base area of at least 12 inches in diameter to accommodate their territorial behavior. Include a mix of smooth rocks, crevices, and overhangs that provide visual barriers without obstructing water flow.

Native to the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, Royal Grammas thrive in temperatures between 72°F-78°F (22°C-25°C) with a slight temperature gradient. Maintain a stable humidity level around 60-70% by avoiding strong air currents and ensuring proper tank ventilation.

Royal Grammas are primarily nocturnal feeders, so supplement their diet with nighttime feeding sessions using high-intensity lighting. Offer frozen meaty foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or small pieces of fish flesh (such as sardines or herring). Target prey size around 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch in diameter.

Feed your Royal Gramma 2-3 times per week, providing enough food for them to consume within 30 seconds to 1 minute. Overfeeding can lead to digestive issues and water quality problems. Observe their feeding behavior carefully to avoid over-provisioning.

Royal Grammas are known for their peaceful nature but may exhibit territorial behavior around food sources or sheltered areas. Handle them gently, supporting the body with one hand while using the other to secure a firm grip on the tail fin. Be cautious of their sharp fins and avoid sudden movements that might provoke stress responses.

Common health issues in Royal Grammas include skin parasites like Oodinium, Amyloodinium, or Cryptocaryon, which can be treated with formalin baths or copper-based medications under professional veterinary guidance.

Regular water changes (10-15% every week) are crucial to maintaining optimal water parameters. Monitor ammonia and nitrite levels closely, as these fish are sensitive to water quality fluctuations.
